Uganda Diabetes Association Hosts Landmark 30th Annual Scientific Conference

The Uganda Diabetes Association (UDA) proudly hosted its 30th Annual Scientific Conference on July 4, 2025, at Hotel Africana, Kampala. This landmark event brought together clinicians, researchers, policymakers, sponsors, and people living with diabetes under the powerful theme: “Locally Adapted Clinical Guidelines as a Guide to Optimal Diabetes Care.”

The conference marked a historic milestone—the official launch of Uganda’s first National Diabetes Management Guidelines, developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Health’s Division of Non-Communicable Diseases. These practical, evidence-based, and locally adapted guidelines are a timely response to the growing burden of diabetes and a step forward in standardizing and improving diabetes care across the country.

Key Highlights:

  • Opening Remarks by Dr. William Lumu, UDA President, emphasized the urgent need for tailored guidance in managing diabetes across all levels of care in Uganda.

  • Launch of the National Guidelines officiated by Dr. Charles Oyoo Akiya, Commissioner for NCDs at the Ministry of Health.

  • Over 12 scientific sessions featuring national experts shared the latest in precision medicine, Type 1 & Type 2 diabetes care, emergency management of DKA and HHS, cardiovascular risk profiling, and diabetes in pregnancy.

  • Speakers included top specialists such as Prof. Silver Bahendeka, Dr. Davis Kibirige, and Dr. James Kayima, among others.

Empowering Diabetes Care in Uganda: A Look Back at Our 2024 IDF Face-to-Face Training

In November 2024, the Uganda Diabetes Association (UDA), in partnership with the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), the IDF School of Diabetes, and Sanofi Global Health Unit, hosted a transformative face-to-face training session for healthcare professionals at Hotel Africana, Kampala.

This landmark event brought together over 120 healthcare providers who had successfully completed the IDF’s online diabetes course—marking not only a graduation but a powerful step toward strengthening diabetes care across Uganda.
