Our History

Our history/Who we are

Uganda Diabetes Association (UDA) is a non-governmental, not for profit organization that cares for, unites and advocates for people affected by or at risk of diabetes in Uganda. It was founded in 1982 by Professor Andrew Marcel Otim.

Uganda Diabetes Association was registered with the Registrar of companies and incorporated in June 28th 2006 as required by the laws of the Republic of Uganda as a company limited by guarantee. It has 22 branches in Mulago, Entebbe, Jinja, Bujiri, Mbale, Kumi,Soroti, Lira, Gulu, Mbarara, Fortportal,Bushenyi, Mityana, Mubende , Masaka ,Tororo,Kiwoko,Kawolo, Kitwe, Kabale,Kasese,Busiro East and Kayunga.

Uganda Diabetes Association is a member of International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and Uganda Non Communicable Disease Alliance (UNCDA).

Currently we have 4000 members.

  • Diabetes Training Workshop for Health Workers in Eastern Uganda at Jinja Hospital on  11th November 2016

  •  Patients’ support symposium on 12th November at Jinja Hospital

  •  Health education talks, Screening and Diabetes Walk on 14th November 2016(World Diabetes Day Celebrations) with the theme ‘Eyes On Diabetes’ and activity ‘Test to Prevent’

  • Gestational Diabetes  in Central Uganda Project funded by World Diabetes Foundation through Danish Family Planning Association and Reproductive Health Uganda. Study sites Luwero and Mengo Hospital

  • Health care practitioners training

  • Branch support supervision

  • Distribution of Revised constitution and signing of memorandum of associations with branches

  • Patient support supervision

  • Drafting of the 5 year UDA strategic plan
